REFLECTIONS ON 73 YEARS

Today was my 73rd  Birthday.  So far so good. It's been a pretty good run.  I've had the love of 3, maybe 4, women.  I've managed, I hope, to maintain the love of my children and so far I haven't had to bury any of them. At least three times I have been a part of a group of men with common goals, competency, and absolute trust. I've experienced quite a few of the envoirments of this world.  I continue to learn more about the past, present and future of  the Universe.  I think I'll stick around a little longer.

RE: JF-10-103 Version 1

CATHARSIS OF AN OLD FORESTER

Dear FRED J. WINKLER,

Thank you for submitting your manuscript titled "CATHARSIS OF AN OLD FORESTER," (see Blog posting blow)

manuscript JF-10-103 Version 1, for review by the Journal of Forestry. Based on the

reviews, I regret to inform you that we will not be able to accept this manuscript for

publication in the journal.

Frankly, I am not sure where you're going with this commentary. Who is the villain? The

corporation? The environmentalists? The public foresters swayed by appeals? All of us?

There is more than enough blame to go around, as far as I can tell, but what is the

lesson here? Saying we acted unsustainably is a fair accusation, but even now the

definition of sustainability is not agreed upon by all segments of our nation, each of

whom expects equal, if not primary, say in how our resources are managed. I can only

imagine the frustration of someone who has spent his life caring for our natural

resources seeing the current state of affairs. A successful commentary in the Journal of

Forestry must do more than vent frustration รข€“ it must clearly articulate the perceived

problem, and outline a suggestion for a solution.

Thank you again for thinking of the Journal of Forestry.

Sincerely,

W. Keith Moser, Dr.For., CF
